Warts

Warts

Plantar warts, or foot warts, originate from a common viral infection known as human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus makes skin cells increase in size and thickness, which is why you experience the lumps and bumps commonly associated with warts of the lower extremities.

Human papillomavirus enters your body when you have a compromised area in your skin. Even a tiny cut can allow HPV to enter your body. You have an increased chance of developing warts if you:

  • Have a history of warts
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Are younger as warts are more common among children and teens

If left untreated, foot warts may cause pain and can even spread to other areas of your body.

Treatment for foot warts

Your podiatrist may recommend the following wart treatments:

  • Injections to destroy the actual virus
  • Freezing the warts (cryotherapy)
  • Prescribed topical medications
  • Laser treatments to close tiny blood vessels in warts

In some cases, surgery is an option to eradicate warts from a specific area
