Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

When the valves in your veins don't work efficiently, it may cause blood to pool in your legs and put increased pressure on the walls of the veins. This condition is commonly due to valve dysfunction, which is likely hereditary, or due to valve destruction after a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis diagnosis.

Although suspected to affect nearly half of the US population, chronic venous insufficiency is more common in women and in people who are middle-aged or older.

Treatment Options for Chronic Venous Insufficiency

  • Usually treated with exercise, compression stockings and weight loss if applicable.
  • In some cases, may require vein ablation or vein stripping by a qualified specialist.
  • Occasionally treated with angioplasty and stents.
  • Preventing severe complications such as venous leg ulcers is key.
