“Put a Sock in It!” Second Annual Sock & Shoe Drive for Homeless

Shoes and socks are something we probably take for granted. For the homeless, the lack of clean, dry footwear is a discomfort that can lead to serious foot problems including frostbite and infections.

To meet this basic need, Village Podiatry Centers is sponsoring their second annual, “Put a Sock in It”, drive to collect new socks, shoes and monetary donations for the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children. The shelter provides daily essentials and counseling services to more than 4,000 women and children each year.

Collection bins for donations are on display at each of Village Podiatry’s 23 metro Atlanta offices. Medical Director, Dr. Mitchell Hilsen, is asking the community to join in the effort.

“Our goal is 3,500 pairs of new socks and shoes which are greatly needed by the shelter’s clients,” said Dr. Hilsen. “As a podiatrist I see too many preventable foot problems. That is especially true for those who are both homeless and diabetic with a propensity for serious foot wounds and infections. Clean, durable foot gear is essential,” he said.

Donations of new socks and shoes can be dropped off through October 31 during regular office hours Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. at any of the metro Atlanta offices. Monetary donations are also being accepted. For information on Village Podiatry Centers’ locations, call 770-384-0284 or go to find an office location.
